An Outdoor Classroom at Rice Elementary School

17 09 2010

North East Trees recently completed the design and construction of an outdoor classroom at Rice Elementary School in the City of Rosemead.

Located in the school playground, this site provides a natural setting for teaching the history of our local rivers and habitat.

The classroom takes the shape of a nautilus. Semi-circular seating and a lecturn are built using river rocks and recycled concrete. The ground surface is made up of three colors of decomposed granite giving it a striking look.  Fifty sycamore and oak trees, and a palette of low water using native plants are planted around the classroom.
